Crossroads: A
Burning Need to Change Course
(2007 Christophe Fauchere 56mins)
Documentary:
As our global population and its appetite for energy rise drastically,
resource depletion and global climate change have become the most pressing
issues facing humanity today. Scientists and experts agree that the use of
renewable energy, coupled with higher efficiency and conservation, will be
key factors in preserving our quality of life and paving the way to a
sustainable world for our children. Will America be up to the task as it
consumes 25% of the world’s energy, 85% of which comes from non-renewable
fossil fuels?

DOUBLE BILL
Peak Oil
imposed by nature (2005 Amund Prestegard 30mins)
This is an excellent introduction to the causes
and consequences of the terminal decline of global oil production as we reach
the global Peak, expected in 2007 - 2010. In the documentary retired world
experienced geologist Dr. Colin Campbell, founder of ASPO, the Association
for the Study of Peak Oil, explains the aspects of oil discovery, the
production increase and the subsequent decline on a local as well as on a
world scale. Dr Campbell serves as our ‘anchor man’ throughout the
documentary, although he is just one of the many informed and informative
analysts featured
The Story
of Stuff (with Annie
Leonard 20 mins)
An animated film which has made a global splash
since it was first launched on-line. This is a fast-paced, fact-filled
look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The film
exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social
issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world.
It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the
way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

A Crude
Awakening: The Oil Crash
(2006 Basil Gelpke
& Ray McCormack 86mins)
A Crude Awakening offers the argument that the era
of cheap oil is in the past, exploring the uncomfortable realities of a world
that is addicted to fossil fuels. As Stanford professor Terry Lynn Karl
explains, "More and more oil is going to come from less and less stable
places...places that actually challenge the taking of oil in the first
place." One of the more chilling revelations concerns the discrepancy
between the reserves oil-producing nations claim they possess and the actual
amount. These padded estimates allow them to drill with impunity, leading to
an abundance of wealth in the short term and cataclysmic consequences once
they've depleted their supply of this non-renewable resource. Featuring a
haunting score by Phillip Glass and a fascinating array of rare archival
footage, the film explores oil's rocky relationship with human progress in
locales ranging from ancient Baku, Azerbaijan
to dusty oil patch town McCamey,
Texas.

HOME
1hr
An ode to
the planet's beauty and its delicate harmony. Through the landscapes of 54
countries captured from above, Yann Arthus-Bertrand takes us on a unique
journey all around the planet, to contemplate it and to understand it. But
HOME is more than a documentary with a message, it is a magnificent movie in
its own right. Every breathtaking shot shows the Earth - our Earth - as we
have never seen it before. Every image shows the Earth's treasures we are
destroying and all the wonders we can still preserve. "From the sky,
there's less need for explanations". Our vision becomes more immediate,
intuitive and emotional. HOME has an impact on anyone who sees it. It awakens
in us the awareness that is needed to change the way we see the world. (HOME
embraces the major ecological issues that confront us and shows how
everything on our planet is interconnected.)

How to Save
the World, One Man, One Cow, One Planet
(2008 Thomas & Barbara Burstyn 104 mins)
Modern
agriculture causes topsoil to be eroded at 3 million tons per hour. (that’s
26 billion tons a year)
Human mass is
replacing biomass and other species. The carrying capacity of the earth is
almost spent.
To maintain our
comfort zone lifestyles we will soon need five earths to sustain us in the
style to which we have become accustomed.
The mantra of
free trade has failed the world’s poor. There is a better way.
Human created
climate change is destroying the Planet. Ecosystems collapse is not some
sci-fi fantasy. It is real and it is happening. Right now.
Biodynamic
agriculture may be the only answer we have left.

The Age of
Stupid (2009 Dir Franny Armstrong 90 mins)
Shown in
partnership with Essex
University Inter
Disciplinary Centre for Environment and Society (iCES)
'The Age
of Stupid' is the new cinema documentary from the Director of 'McLibel' and
the Producer of the Oscar-winning 'One Day in September'. This enormously
ambitious drama-documentary-animation hybrid stars Oscar-nominated Pete
Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching
'archive' footage from 2008 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change
while we had the chance?

Power of
Community: How Cuba
Survived Peak
Oil
(2006 Dir Faith Morgan 53 mins)
When the
Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a
tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent
– people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as
well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this
difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized,
industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and
local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during
this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The
film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our
history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to
decline forever. Cuba,
the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of
fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.

The End of the Line (2009)
Duration: 1hr 25mins
Genre: Documentary
Director: Rupert Murray
URL: http://endoftheline.com/film/
"The End of the Line" is a feature-length film based on the 2004
book by Charles Clover, Environment Editor of London’s Daily Telegraph,
which exposes the effects of overfishing on oceans and those who depend
on them for food. The End Of The Line is an evocative and shocking
portrayal of what we have done and are doing to our oceans – just to
put seafood on our plates. This film looks at the role of
conservationists, governments and multi-national companies and
considers some models for recovery, for example how Barents Sea Cod,
Icelandic Cod, North Sea Herring have been rescued from near
extinction, the possibilities of fish farming and the potential of
locally managed offshore marine reserves. Saturday 6th June - 'Cycle five miles to fabulous'. All welcome to join a family friendly led ride along the picturesque Wivenhoe Trail.
